Microsoft has made the decision to "Pull the plug" on Internet Explorer 7 (IE7) validation. This means that users of Windows XP will now be able to download IE7 with having to go through the Windows Genuine Advantage authentication in-order to install and download the software.
Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA) is part of Microsoft’s Genuine Software Initiative. Windows Genuine Advantage is designed to help prevent the distribution and unauthorized use of it’s Windows Operating Systems. Previously, Microsoft required users of Windows XP to validate their version of Windows XP in order to download and install Internet Explorer 7.
"Microsoft takes its commitment to help protect the entire Windows ecosystem seriously, and we’re taking a step to help make consumers safer online," said a representative. "We feel the security enhancements to Internet Explorer 7 are significant enough that it should be available as broadly as possible, and this means removing WGA validation."
The representative said that removing the validation did "not interfere with Microsoft’s commitment to fighting software piracy."
coincidentally, the press seems to think that Microsoft had dropped the WGA requirements for IE7 because they feel IE7 adoption is too low according to Microsoft’s tastes.
Additionally, Microsoft’s Internet Explorer 7 and Mozilla’s Firefox web browsers are gaining market share, it appears that Microsoft’s Internet Explorer 6 is in-fact losing market share.
