Windows Vista contains numerous new applications to help you monitor your systems reliability and performance, however to maintain peak performance of your system you need to do a couple of things. In order to maintain peak performance of your system you will need to make sure that you keep all of the "extra junk" removed from your system. The "Extra Junk" I am referring to are temporary Internet files, temporary installation files and other unneeded files that are just taking up space and slowing your system down.
Using Disk Cleanup To Remove Temporary Files
Windows Vista and previous versions of Windows has included a tool simply called Disk Cleanup, Disk Cleanup allows you to remove a number of different files that Windows stores on your computers hard drive. It removes temporary files, empties the Recycle Bin, and removes a variety of system files and other items that you no longer need.
Accessing Disk Cleanup
1. Open Disk Cleanup by clicking the Start button , clicking All Programs, clicking Accessories, clicking System Tools, and then clicking Disk Cleanup.
2. In the Disk Cleanup Options dialog box, choose whether you want to clean up your own files only or all of the files on the computer. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
3. If the Disk Cleanup: Drive Selection dialog box appears, select the hard disk drive that you want to clean up, and then click OK.
4. Click the Disk Cleanup tab, and then select the check boxes for the files you want to delete.
5. When you finish selecting the files you want to delete, click OK, and then click Delete files to confirm the operation. Disk Cleanup proceeds to remove all unnecessary files from your computer.
Alternatively, you can access Windows Disk Cleanup by doing the following:
1. Open Disk Cleanup by clicking the Start button , clicking Computer (on the right of the start menu).
2. Right Click on your primary hard drive (Which is normally Drive C:\) and selecting Properties.
3.Click the General tab and the click the Disk Cleanup button to launch the Disk Cleanup wizard.
In the following video demo I demonstrate how you can use Disk Cleanup and how to access Disk Cleanup from Windows Explorer.
